Brighton (UK) Hackathon
Leap Motion has kindly provided us with a set of developer's kits for use by participants at the Brighton Data-Storytelling Hackathon on 13-15 Sept at the Brighton FuseBox. We can't wait to see what our participants will do with them to create interactive data-art projects.
At this event data viz specialists, data-driven artists, data scientists, and a number of talented developers will converge to attack one of the most critical issues of this century: The Global Financial Crisis and Recovery. If you are up for the challenge, join us for a 48 hackathon that will seek to create intuitive and interactive digital and physical explanations of this complex and often baffling set of events of the past seven years.
The organisers and sponsors are providing a massive amount of raw data on the crisis, a number of interesting toolsets for working with it, mentoring and food for the entire weekend. If you are one of the hardy souls who'll stay for every minute of the event, there are also comfy bean bags to collapse on.
Who should come? Designer or artist participants should be comfortable with the idea of (and excited about producing) data-driven art and with working directly with geeks to bring a Data-Story to life. As a developer, you should probably have experience with Python or another scripting language for rapid data analysis or munging, be a database whiz, or be handy with visualisation and graphics libraries (i.e. D3.js, WebGL, OpenGL, processing, etc.) Data scientist participants should have experience with AI, NLP, or statistical analysis of large datasets. This will be a fantastic opportunity to showcase your skills, as interesting work done at the hackathon will likely get press attention.
