SDK Agreement FAQs

Thank you for being a member of the Leap Motion development community!

We have prepared the FAQs below to help answer questions about our updated SDK Agreement. The FAQs are qualified by the terms of the agreement, which you should review carefully. If you have any questions after reviewing the FAQs and the SDK Agreement, please contact us at developers@leapmotion.com .

What are the main changes in the updated SDK Agreement?

The prior version of the SDK Agreement let you develop and test Leap Motion-enabled applications. The updated agreement adds distribution rights for almost all applications - the only exception is for Specialized Applications, which we explain below. We have also updated the formatting and language in the agreement.

What if I already agreed to the prior version of the SDK Agreement?

We will ask you to agree to the new agreement during login beginning May 15th. You will be required to agree to the new terms in order to receive future updates to the SDK or distribute your application.

Can I only distribute my application through Airspace, the Leap Motion app store?

No. We believe Airspace will be the first and best place consumers go to discover and download Leap Motion-enabled apps. However, you are not required to distribute your application through Airspace. And, if you do, you‰Ûªre not limited to only using Airspace ‰ÛÒ you can distribute your app through whatever other platform or marketplace you choose.

Where can I find the Airspace Developer Distribution Agreement and guidelines?

The Airspace Developer Distribution Agreement and review guidelines are available at https://www.leapmotiontechnology.com/apps/guidelines.

What is a Specialized Application, and why must I contact Leap Motion if I want to distribute one?

Basically, a Specialized Application is a Leap Motion-enabled application which is: (i) priced at more than US$500 (or $240/year if on a subscription or similar basis); (ii) for use with another application, system, machine or device (other than a PC), priced at more than US$500 (or $240/year if on a subscription or similar basis); or (iii) designed for use with or control of industrial, commercial or medical equipment.

If you would like to distribute a Specialized Application, please contact our business development team at partnerships@leapmotion.com. We are not permitting distribution of Specialized Applications under the SDK Agreement or through Airspace at this time.

We have set $500 (or $240/year if on a subscription basis) as the price limit for applications, because we believe this should cover over 99% of potential applications. We think that above these prices the use may be so specialized that it is appropriate to have a separate agreement. The same goes for uses with other systems, machines or devices above $500 / $240.

We do not allow distribution under the SDK Agreement of applications at any price if the application is to control industrial, commercial or medical equipment. Again, we believe that for these uses it is appropriate to have a separate agreement.

Does Leap Motion have a standard agreement for Specialized Applications?

Because of the diverse range of potential Specialized Applications, we do not have a standard agreement. Please contact our business development team at partnerships@leapmotion.com.

Does the updated agreement restrict development of Specialized Applications?

No. The restriction in the agreement applies to distribution of Specialized Applications. You can still test and develop Specialized Applications.

I‰Ûªm a maker, and have put together something to control my drone / robot / dragon. What‰Ûªs up?

In general, make away! If you are doing it for yourself, and don‰Ûªt plan to distribute it to others, you are largely free to test and develop as you like. And, if you do want to distribute your app, our restrictions apply to industrial, commercial or medical equipment, or to other equipment if you plan to sell it (and then, only if it‰Ûªs priced at more than $500). (Of course, we don‰Ûªt allow uses where failure of the controller or software could lead to lead to death or serious bodily injury of any person, or to severe physical or environmental damage.)
